START DATE

COMPLETION DATE
December 2023
SCOPE OF THE WORK
As part of Metro Vancouver’s ongoing commitment to ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply, we are proud to be involved in the construction of a new water supply tunnel beneath Burrard Inlet. This vital infrastructure project aims to improve the region’s resilience against seismic events and accommodate the needs of a rapidly growing population.
Collaborating with industry leaders, the project entails the construction of a 1,100-meter-long tunnel, excavated deep underground using advanced tunnel boring machinery. Launching from a 60-meter-deep vertical entry shaft in North Vancouver, the tunnel boring machine will progress south beneath Burrard Inlet and emerge at the 110-meter-deep vertical exit shaft in Burnaby.
Upon completion of the tunnel excavation, three steel water mains will be installed within the tunnel and connected to new valve chambers at each shaft site, integrating seamlessly into the region’s existing drinking water system. This strategic upgrade will not only enhance the system’s ability to withstand seismic events, but also increase its overall capacity to meet the long-term needs of Metro Vancouver’s expanding population.
Key construction activities for this project include:
- Shaft excavation and shoring
- Valve chamber and pipe installation
- Welding, backfilling, and restoration
